NSIIndex score story

How every Index score is calculated

The live numbers on the Index come from one published formula. Nothing is hidden and nobody can set their own score.

The formula

Score = ( 2 × Opportunity + Risk of waiting − Effort ) ÷ 8 × 100

Step by step

  1. 01

    Rate three things

Opportunity, risk of waiting and effort. Each one is Low (1), Medium (2) or High (3).

  2. 02

    Weigh them

Opportunity counts twice. Risk of waiting is added once. Effort is taken away once.

  3. 03

    Scale to 100

The result runs from 0 to 8. It is divided by 8, multiplied by 100 and rounded.

  4. 04

    Rank and act

Higher scores go first in Monday Brief. Every decision still needs an owner, a due date and a next action.

A worked example

Opportunity High (3), risk of waiting Medium (2), effort Low (1).

2 × 3 + 2 − 1 = 7 → 7 ÷ 8 × 100 = 87.5 → 88

Where the live numbers come from

  • The live score tracker runs this formula in your browser as you rate.
  • A decision sent in by an attached system is scored by North Star with this same formula, so the sender can never set its own number.
  • Your total on the Index dashboard is the average score of your saved decisions.
