Academy 06 Remember

Make the next decision start further along

Memory is the only part of the loop that pays interest. The gap between what a score predicted and what actually happened is the lesson worth keeping.

Competency

Institutional memory and compounding

Why it matters

  • Experience that lives in one operator's head leaves when that operator does.
  • The useful lesson is rarely the outcome. It is the size and direction of the error in the score.
  • Without memory, an organization relitigates the same decision every season and calls it experience.

How to run it

  • Write the difference between the predicted band and the observed result in one line.
  • Say which input was wrong, and by how much, rather than blaming the outcome.
  • Tag the lesson to the shape of the decision so it surfaces the next time that shape appears.
  • Adjust the next score of that shape and note that you did, so the change is reviewable.
  • Teach the lesson to one other person and let them restate it in their own words.
  • Keep the ledger in one place the next decision opens first.

Evidence it ran

  • A one line lesson attached to the closed record.
  • A named input that was mis-scored, with the correction.
  • A visible link from the lesson to the next decision of the same shape.

Competency pulls

The skills this stage draws on, written in our own words and taught against a real decision in your shop.

  • Teaching the shop, so fluency does not live in one head.
  • Coaching patterns borrowed from classroom practice and reused on a crew.
  • A written project memory the next decision reads first, kept as the NSI outcome ledger.
